He painted only thirty paintings and most people did not enjoy his work. Even though he is a famous painter now, Johannes was not well known when he was living. Just like his father, Johannes was an innkeeper and he worked for a rich family in the village, painting pictures for their home. Unlike some painters, Vermeer was not well-known outside of his little village so he also worked at other jobs to help take care of his family.
